What’s at Stake for Georgia Health Care in the 2024 Election

What This Election Means for Health Care in Georgia

The 2024 election is nearly here, and the results will have huge implications for health care in Georgia. Your vote will shape critical decisions that affect how affordable and accessible health care is for all of us. From the future of affordable coverage to filling gaps in care for communities across the state, there’s a lot on the line.

As you prepare to vote, it’s important to understand what’s at stake and how the results could change health care in Georgia—especially for those who need it most.

The President’s role: What it means for your health care options

The President plays a big role in shaping our health care system. They have the power to:

  • Sign or block laws that can expand (or shrink!) access to care, including Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA)—two programs that help millions get coverage.
  • Appoint health care officials and judges who interpret and enforce health care laws, which influences how these programs are applied.

These decisions can make it easier—or harder—for people to get the care they need. For example, will the next President support renewing subsidies that help more than 1.3 million Georgians afford health insurance?

It’s these decisions that could directly affect your access to care and your out-of-pocket costs.

Why Congress Matters for Your Health

Congress plays a huge part in how health care works in Georgia. They control the federal budget for programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and the ACA—decisions that directly impact funding for rural hospitals, mental health care, and more.

Imagine the difference if Congress invested more in mental health services or made sure more rural hospitals could keep their doors open. This election is your chance to choose candidates who align with your priorities.

Before you vote, take time to research where your congressional candidates stand on funding for health services in Georgia. You can check your ballot here.

State Lawmakers: Bringing Health Care Home

In Georgia, the General Assembly decides how our state spends money on health care, from Medicaid to public health funding. Their decisions could:

  • Expand Medicaid to help over 240,000 Georgians in the coverage gap.
  • Strengthen our public health system so we’re better prepared for health crises.
  • Ensure rural communities have access to doctors and hospitals.

Before you head to the polls, see if the candidates in your district have plans for Medicaid expansion and improving health access for all Georgians.

Key Health Issues You Should Care About

Here are a few health care issues that will impact you, your family, and your neighbors:

Closing Georgia’s Coverage Gap

More than 240,000 Georgians don’t have health insurance because they fall into the Medicaid coverage gap. Many work in essential roles like child care, food service, and other essential roles. Expanding Medicaid could help them get the care they need without facing high medical bills, while also leading to a healthier workforce and increased economic growth in our state.

Make sure you research where your candidates stand on Medicaid expansion.

Investing in Public Health

Our health is closely tied to factors like housing, employment, education, and access to food. Georgia has consistently ranked among the bottom 10 states for overall health and well-being, leading to severe health and economic consequences for Georgians.

Look into whether your candidates have a plan to invest in public health so everyone can live healthier lives.

Protecting Mental Health Care

Georgia ranks among the worst states for access to mental health care. Even with recent improvements, many people still struggle to get the support they need.

Find out what plans candidates have to make sure mental health services are available to everyone, no matter where they live.

What You Should Do Before You Vote

Before you head to the polls, take a few moments to research the candidates and their positions on health care. It’s the best way to make an informed choice about who will fight for a healthier Georgia.

Some questions you might want to explore:

  • Do they support expanding Medicaid to close the coverage gap?
  • Will they protect access to mental health services?
  • How will they ensure rural hospitals stay open?
  • What are their plans to address health disparities for Black Georgians and other communities of color?

A little research can go a long way in finding the candidates who will fight for the health care issues that matter most to you.

Make Your Voice Count

The 2024 election is your chance to shape the future of health care in Georgia. Your vote matters—it can help ensure that Georgia has leaders who will fight for better access, affordability, and quality in health care.

Do your research, check your ballot, and vote for a healthier Georgia!
