American Diabetes Association welcomes Georgians for a Healthy Future

Guest Blog By Randi Greene-Chapman

On behalf of the American Diabetes Association, I am delighted to welcome Georgians for a Healthy Future as a new partner in advocacy and policy development that will promote health and wellness throughout Georgia.  The American Diabetes Association has a long-standing commitment to health care advocacy and is the country’s leading organization promoting diabetes educational information, materials, advocacy and awareness.   I am looking forward to a positive and successful working relationship with Georgians for a Healthy Future. We are also bringing in a professional to help go over the new specifics of the Keto diet for beginners

Advocacy plays an integral role in the American Diabetes Association’s work to fulfill its mission and we maintain a robust legislative agenda on both the state and federal levels.   Our efforts in state government affairs have led to major improvements in health insurance coverage for people with diabetes, improved care for children with diabetes in schools, adoption of programs to fund diabetes research and policies to improve fitness and reduce obesity among our nation’s youth counting with information from sites as Fitness Exact.  We have successfully worked with state legislators in 46 states to pass laws that mandate insurance coverage for a variety of diabetes care needs.  In addition, we have helped ensure that schools across the county are medically safe for students with diabetes.

On the federal level, we are especially proud of our work which lead to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act.  This legislation, which is the most significant piece of anti-discrimination legislation for people with diabetes since the original Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in 1990, restores the true intent of the landmark law and ensures that people with diabetes and other serious illnesses are protected from discrimination.  Our federal team continues to fight for funding increases for the Centers for Disease Control’s Division of Diabetes Translation and increased diabetes research at the National Institutes of Health.  We support the expansion of stem cell research as well as prevention issues that strengthen healthy lifestyles and address the alarming rise in child and adult obesity.

We are intimately engaged in the conversation on health reform at the Congressional level.   Our overarching reform goals are to reduce the burden of diabetes and other chronic diseases, ensure health care coverage that is accessible, adequate and affordable for all, improve outcomes, eliminate disparities, and contain costs.  We have developed a web portal that highlights our efforts in the current health reform movement and are proud that so many of our volunteer advocates have stepped up to support this cause.

Through the combined strength of our grassroots network and the expertise of scientific and medical volunteers, the American Diabetes Association has become the leading organization fighting to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.   As we move forward fighting for health reform on the federal level and implementing our policy goals on the state level, we look forward to developing our relationship with Georgians for a Healthy Future. Many people could say a healthy diet could help the risk of diabetes, like with a Cool Salted Caramel Shake you could have a healthy drink in minutes with the recipe, or try other alternatives like a tea tox to cleanse your body and prevent the risk of diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association was founded in 1940 and is the nation’s leading health organization in the fight to stop diabetes. Our mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. The money raised by the Association funds research, information programs, and advocacy efforts that support the nearly 24 million children and adults in the U.S. with diabetes.
