“Our elected officials can’t address real issues that people are experiencing in the health care system unless they’re hearing from their constituents. And so people should take the time, write their elected officials and email. What’s working for their health care? What’s not working?
Laura Colbert, the executive director of the patient-advocacy group Georgians for a Healthy Future, is especially concerned about rural patients.
Ninety percent of Georgia’s Obamacare customers would be protected from the cost hikes by another kind of subsidy that they qualify for, which would fill the gap. However, Colbert added, “many middle- and higher-income people, and families who do not get any help purchasing insurance, would be hit with higher prices.”
Georgians for a Healthy Future called it a “win for Georgians” but also group also acknowledged that “our work is not over,” it said in a statement.
“This outcome is a victory for Georgians in every corner of the state,” a patients’ advocacy group, Georgians for a Healthy Future, said in a notice to its members thanking them for fighting the “unconscionable cuts.”
“In Medicaid expansion, states’ premiums have been 7 to 8 percent lower,” said Laura Colbert with Georgians for a Healthy Future, a group that supports Medicaid expansion.
Laura Colbert of consumer group Georgians for a Healthy Future said, “We are disappointed that the Senate has chosen to move forward on proposals that so clearly threaten the coverage and access that Georgia consumers and patients rely on every day.”
“It was very intense,” Laura Colbert said. “This has been a really intense period and a long fight. So I think we had some hope that we might have a resolution today and we could really begin a more deliberative and constructive policy making process. So it is disappointing that we’re not there yet.”
“The way to fix that is the opposite of essentially what would be happening in the Senate bill,” said Laura Colbert, the director of outreach for the patient advocacy group Georgians for a Healthy Future.
“For the individual market, (Blue Cross Blue Shield) is probably are the most important insurer in the state. They cover all 159 counties, and for 96 of Georgia’s counties, they’re the only insurer in the individual marketplace,” says Laura Colbert with non-partisan group Georgians for a Healthy Future.
