On Wednesday, November 30th, Georgians for a Healthy Future held our fifth and final symposium as part of our Building a Healthy Georgia Campaign in Savannah at the Coastal Georgia Center.  We were joined by Professor Nicole Oretsky from Savannah State University, Dr. Paula Reynolds from the Chatham County Safety-net Planning Council, and Robert Bush from Georgia Legal Services.  The event, Widening the Safety-net and Ensuring Greater Access to Care, took a look at the societal and economic determinants that have led to our current health care system as well as an exploration of the current safety net in the Coastal region and what opportunities will be available through the Affordable Care Act to strengthen it.  The presentations can be found below.

Our fourth symposium in our Building a Healthy Georgia series was held on Tuesday, November 15th in Macon at the Marriott Convention Center.  Working with AARP of Georgia and the Middle Georgia Area Agency on Aging, the event, The Impact of Health Care Reform on Central Georgia’s 50+ Community covered topics such as closing the Medicare Donut Hole, new preventive services available to seniors, long-term care options and the importance of caregivers.  The presentation is available below.

September 8, 2011: Health Care Reform and the Cancer Survivor: What You Need to Know

The third event in our Building a Healthy Georgia campaign was on Tuesday, September 27th in Athens, at the University of Georgia.  Georgians for a Healthy Future, the Partner Up for Public Health Campaign and Health STAT convened public health professionals, students, professors and other medical professionals for The Role of Future Public Health Professionals and Public Health Policy-making.  The power point presentation can be found below.

On Saturday, April 30th, Outreach and Advocacy Director Amanda Ptashkin presented “The Power of Advocacy” to the 12th Annual Parenting Your Heart Child Conference.  The presentation goes over the current state of health and healthcare in Georgia, changes that are coming and the importance of being an advocate. On Saturday, February 26th, Georgians for a Healthy Future presented to the 3rd Annual Congenital Heart Defect Conference.  The presentation focused on health insurance and how reforms affect Georgians, particularly those with pre-existing conditions.

Georgians for a Healthy Future participated in the plenary session of the 12th Annual African American Outreach Initiative on Saturday, February 12th, 2011.  The session was entitled “HIV 2011 and Beyond.”
