April 10, 2013: Webinar on health insurance outreach, enrollment, and navigators
Georgians for a Healthy Future partnered with Enroll America, Families USA, and Seedco to host a webinar for community-based organizations interested in connecting uninsured Georgians to coverage either through becoming health insurance navigators or through other outreach and education efforts. The webinar provided an overview of the demographics of Georgia’s uninsured, information about the new health insurance options that will be available through the new Health Insurance Marketplace as part of the Affordable Care Act, and details about the recent funding opportunity announcement released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for navigator grants. March 20, 2013: Georgia Alliance of Information and Referral Systems quarterly meeting and training
On Wednesday, March 20, GAIRS (Georgia Alliance of Information and Referral Systems) held their quarterly meeting and training in Macon and welcomed Amanda Ptashkin, Georgians for a Healthy Future’s Outreach and Advocacy Director, to educate their members on implementation of the Affordable Care Act. GAIRS is an organization made up primarily of individuals who work in the field of information and referral/assistance. The training aimed to prepare members to respond to inquiries about different services and programs for seniors, caregivers, persons with developmental disabilities, and the general public. February 14, 2013: Carter Center public policy forum on improving access to mental health and addiction services: Medicaid expansion and alternative approaches
Georgians for a Healthy Future’s Executive Director Cindy Zeldin participated in a panel discussion at the Carter Center to discuss how expanding Medicaid would impact uninsured Georgians who need access to mental health and addiction services. Georgians for a Healthy Future’s Outreach & Advocacy Director Amanda Ptashkin gave a webinar presentation for GASOPHE and the Emory Public Health Training Center about health care reform in Georgia and the importance of coverage. This webinar explained the current state of the ACA in Georgia, described the biggest obstacles and challenges facing public health professionals and average health care consumers, and highlighted ways we can move towards a system where everyone has access to quality, affordable health care. October 29, 2012: The Social Work Oncology Group of Georgia
Georgians for a Healthy Future’s Outreach & Advocacy Director Amanda Ptashkin gave a presentation to the Social Work Oncology Group of Georgia (GA SWOG) about the evolving health care policy landscape and what it means for social workers and their patients. GA SWOG is a professional organization with members who practice in varied settings where people access oncology-related services. Their annual conference focuses on furthering clinical and organizational social work skills to meet the full spectrum of psychosocial needs of cancer survivors and families. October 24, 2012: UGA’s College of Public Health Undergraduate Ambassador Program
Georgians for a Healthy Future’s Outreach & Advocacy Director Amanda Ptashkin gave a presentation to the University of Georgia’s College of Public Health Undergraduate Ambassador program entitled, “The Power of Advocacy: Changing the Face of Health Care.” The program, which works with undergraduate students with a commitment to public health, allows students to develop a strong professional network of students, faculty, alumni, and professionals in public health science fields. October 26, 2012: Annual Georgia Women’s Assembly
Georgians for a Healthy Future’s Executive Director Cindy Zeldin jointly led the health care workshop with Representative Pat Gardner at the annual Georgia Women’s Assembly, organized by Georgia Women for a Change. The presentation and discussion focused on 1) the important role that Medicaid plays today for many women, serving as a source of coverage for low and moderate-income pregnant women, low-income mothers, and low-income women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer and 2) the benefits that could accrue to uninsured women, more than two-thirds of whom report difficulty accessing care, through the Medicaid expansion. September 18, 2012: Presentation to the Greater Augusta Healthcare Network
Georgians for a Healthy Future’s Executive Director Cindy Zeldin and the Georgia Budget & Policy Institute’s Director of Health Policy Tim Sweeney were invited to give a joint presentation to a meeting of the Greater Augusta Healthcare Network. The presentation focused on the uninsured in Georgia, the Affordable Care Act, and Medicaid. Following the discussion, we toured a local community health center to learn more about efforts to improve access to care and coordinate the safety net in the Augusta area. The discussion focused on Medicaid in Georgia and featured perspectives from consumer, hospital, and physician perspectives. Health Care Unscrambled: A Look Ahead to the 2012 Legislative Session
On January 12th, 2012, Georgians for a Healthy Future held our second annual Health Care Unscrambled policy breakfast event. We took an energizing look ahead to the most important health care issues facing Georgia in 2012. Health Care Unscrambled featured a panel of policymakers including Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens, Representatives Pat Gardner and Richard Smith, and Senators Renee Unterman and Nan Orrock. We heard from these key decision-makers about the issues on their radar, and we also got a report on the national landscape from Dr. Len Nichols, a health economist and health reform expert. The event was a unique opportunity for policymakers, stakeholders, academics, and advocates to come together to discuss Georgia’s health care challenges and opportunities just as the 2012 Legislative Session is getting underway. On Wednesday, November 30th, Georgians for a Healthy Future held our fifth and final symposium as part of our Building a Healthy Georgia series in Savannah at the Coastal Georgia Center. We were joined by Professor Nicole Oretsky from Savannah State University, Dr. Paula Reynolds from the Chatham County Safety-net Planning Council, and Robert Bush from Georgia Legal Services. The event, Widening the Safety-net and Ensuring Greater Access to Care, took a look at the societal and economic determinants that have led to our current health care system as well as an exploration of the current safety net in the Coastal region and what opportunities will be available through the Affordable Care Act to strengthen it. Our fourth symposium in our Building a Healthy Georgia series was held on Tuesday, November 15th in Macon at the Marriott Convention Center. Working with AARP of Georgia and the Middle Georgia Area Agency on Aging, the event, The Impact of Health Care Reform on Central Georgia’s 50+ Community covered topics such as closing the Medicare donut hole, new preventive services available to seniors, long-term care options and the importance of caregivers.
